Is St Lucia the right island for you?
Saint Lucia is an Eastern Caribbean island south of Martinique. Its appeal is the combination of volcanic scenery, rainforest, beaches and small coastal communities. The Pitons and the area around Soufrière are the signature landscape, not the view from every hotel.
Choose it if you want a beach holiday with time for trails, gardens or boat trips. If your priority is a flat, easily walkable resort, check the property layout before booking: both scenery and room access can involve hills.
Where is the best part of St Lucia to stay?
Match your base to your two most important days. A couple planning Piton scenery and Sulphur Springs has different needs from a family planning beach time and northern outings.
| Area | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Soufrière and the southwest | Pitons, gardens, dramatic resort settings | Northern evening outings require a separate journey |
| Rodney Bay and the northwest | Beach days, restaurants, Pigeon Island and Gros Islet | Piton excursions are a day trip, not a local stroll |
| Marigot Bay and the west coast | Sheltered bays and coastal boat trips | Check road access and pickup points for each outing |
Which side has the best beaches?
There is no single best beach for every trip. The tourism authority describes the west as the sheltered, leeward coast and the east as more exposed to Atlantic breezes. For a first visit focused on swimming and relaxed beach days, start your search on the western or northwestern coast.
A beach photograph cannot tell you the sea conditions on your dates. Ask about current swimming conditions, access from your room and whether loungers or facilities are reserved for hotel guests. Choose scenery, easy access or water activities as your priority, rather than trying to rank every beach.
Is St Lucia expensive?
A stay at a private-pool resort and a stay near local restaurants are different budgets. Compare the whole trip: room, taxes and fees, meals, airport transfers, excursions and transport between areas. A lower nightly price can lose its advantage if the location creates several private transfers.
Keep dates, occupancy and cancellation terms identical when comparing quotes. Do not compare a room-only rate with an all-inclusive package or assume that a package includes international flights.
Check the airport before arranging a transfer
The airport code matters. Hewanorra International Airport is UVF; George F. L. Charles Airport is SLU. Sugar Beach, for example, estimates 45 minutes from UVF but 80 minutes from SLU. Those are that resort's estimates, not island-wide transfer times.
Send your flight number and arrival time when requesting transport. If stairs, slopes or motion sickness affect your plans, ask for a property-specific access description and a realistic road transfer estimate before paying.
Put your shortlist on the map
Compare locations before prices. Select your dates and guest numbers on the map, then check the final property's name and room category. A nearby pin is not necessarily one of the resorts in our shortlist.
