Private resort or local-island stay?
A resort stay puts the room, dining and activity programme at the centre of the holiday. A local-island itinerary is a different travel model: compare guesthouse arrangements, transport and locally available activities together. Do not assume that a guesthouse excursion includes pickup from a private resort.
Compare four options in our resort collection.
How many days do you need?
We suggest five to seven nights on one island. For a shorter break, check room-arrival and airport-departure times to see how much island time you will have.
For a seven-night plan, keep arrival day uncommitted, use the next day to settle in, spread two or three booked activities across the middle of the stay, and leave room to reschedule. For a split stay, get the actual inter-island transfer plan before committing. Do not assume the resorts can take you directly between them.
How much should you budget?
Compare quotes for the same dates, guests, room type and meal plan. Include:
- Accommodation for every night, including child and extra-bed charges.
- Return airport transfers for every guest, plus excess baggage if applicable.
- Meals, drinks and menu supplements outside the chosen package.
- Taxes and service charges, with the seller confirming what is already included.
- Activities, insurance and any airport overnight stay required by the itinerary.
Request this total from each seller using the same cancellation terms. For payment, confirm the billing currency, accepted payment method and any card or conversion charges before paying. Do not assume an advertised dollar price is the currency your card will be charged in.
How do you get from the airport to the resort?
In our collection, the Ritz-Carlton offers a reserved boat connection from the Malé airport area. Kandima, Siyam World and Soneva Jani publish air-transfer options. Flight or sailing time is only one part of the journey; immigration, check-in and waiting add time.
Send reservations your arrival and departure flight numbers before booking. Ask for both connection deadlines, the whole-party return price, baggage rules and a delayed-flight plan. See the property-specific transfer sections rather than applying one resort's cutoff to another.
What entry checks should you make before booking?
Maldives Immigration describes tourist visas as granted on arrival, subject to entry requirements and the officer's decision. Its Tourist Visa page requires a machine-readable travel document with at least one month's validity, confirmed return travel, prepaid registered accommodation and sufficient funds. Children need their own passports.
The same page instructs arriving foreign visitors to submit the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration within the 96 hours before arrival. Route-specific health documentation and onward-country requirements may also apply. It states that entry on Israeli passports is not permitted, effective 15 April 2025.
Check current requirements with Maldives Immigration and your airline for your passport and route before paying for non-refundable travel.
When should you go, and what should you book?
Choose dates using our month-by-month season guide. Then choose activities using our departure-island checklist.
For a honeymoon, decide whether beach access or an overwater setting matters more. For families, confirm the exact room capacity and children's ages first. In either case, a slide or private pool is a feature to assess, not a guarantee of suitability.
